Watch Description
Presented here is a Cartier Tank Basculante 2390 Mécanique in a rare full set.
Cartier Tank was a tribute to the Allied Troops and their tanks. Hence, the name and the form. The model started in 1917 but was made public in 1919 once the peace had returned. Tank watches are easily recognisable because of their crossbars, sidepieces and their rectangular or square form. It belongs to the most important watches in history and it is one of the pillars of Cartier.
In 1933 the Tank line was expanded with the introduction of the Basculante. Retaining the rectangular shape the watch was engineered to be able to turn the body of the watch completely over to protect the face. Much like Cartier’s partner Jaeger LeCoultre’s Reverso, the Basculante catered for sports and other situations where the wearer needed to protect the watch’s glass. However, unlike the Reverso that turned on its horizontal axis, the Basculante was flipped vertically through 360 degrees.
The Cartier Tank 2390 mécanique was produced for a very short time and today, the mechanical version of the Tank is not something you see everyday.

# Cartier Tank Basculante Mecanique Review by A.I. WatchMetrics
## Watch Summary
The Cartier Tank Basculante Mecanique is a refined Art Deco rectangular dress watch renowned for its patented basculante mechanism, allowing the entire case to pivot 180 degrees and reveal the hand-finished mechanical movement on the front while hiding the dial on the back, making it a conversation piece for elegant collectors and high-society formal wearers who appreciate mechanical artistry over everyday utility, powered by the manual-wind Caliber 430 MC offering a 38-hour power reserve.
## Overall Watch Rating: 8.6/10.0
**History & Innovation Metric (9.5/10.0)** - The Tank's century-old iconic status combined with the ingenious 1930s basculante patent rivals the inventive legacy of Patek Philippe's Calatrava complications.
**Dials & Design Metric (9.6/10.0)** - Exemplary guilloche dial with Roman numerals and slim case proportions set a benchmark for dress watch elegance akin to Vacheron Constantin's Patrimony.
**Movement Metric (9.5/10.0)** - The in-house 430 MC manual caliber delivers haute-level finishing and reliability comparable to Jaeger-LeCoultre's entry-level mechanicals.
**Material Metric (9.3/10.0)** - Premium 18k white gold case with sapphire crystal and meticulous polishing exceeds typical luxury standards like those in Omega's gold De Ville models.
**Brand Metric (8.8/10.0)** - Cartier's storied luxury prestige aligns with peers like Audemars Piguet in global recognition and artisanal execution.
**Rarity Metric (9.1/10.0)** - Limited production and high secondary values around $28,000 place it in the scarce territory of independent microbrands like Laurent Ferrier.
**Versatility Metric (8.2/10.0)** - Suited primarily for formal black-tie events, it offers more flexibility than ultra-niche pieces like the A. Lange & Söhne Cabaret but less than a Rolex Datejust.
**Complications Metric (3.8/10.0)** - Minimalist with only small seconds, it lags behind multifunction icons like the IWC Portugieser with its array of chronograph and date features.
**Functions Metric (4.5/10.0)** - Basic timekeeping with sub-seconds falls short of feature-packed tool watches like the Grand Seiko Spring Drive with GMT and power reserve.
## Total Performance Score (TPS): 9.3
## WM Collector Grade: A+
## Performance Insights: Excels in design heritage, materials, and movement quality for a standout collector's piece, tempered by sparse functions, delivering superior value well below its $45,000 implied price point.
## TPS Interpretation: Superior Value: The watch outperforms expectations with exceptional historical design and mechanics at its price, ideal for discerning enthusiasts.
